The capacity to notice the roles, stories and inherited descriptions shaping who you think you are, while leaving room for a more current and self-authored sense of yourself.
Identity & self-recognition is the capacity to notice the descriptions you use for yourself without confusing every familiar description with a permanent fact.
You can be competent, caring, ambitious, private, sensual, difficult, dependable, independent or “the strong one” and still ask where those descriptions came from, when they fit, and what they ask you to keep performing.
The role can be real without being the whole person.
Self-recognition becomes useful when it adds precision rather than replacing one label with another. The question is not “Who am I really?” as if one perfect answer is hiding underneath. It is whether you can notice the role you have stepped into, the history attached to it, and what else is present now.
In I AWAKE, this capacity includes role recognition and self-definition: seeing what you have learned to be, then participating more consciously in what continues.
