Gesture

A gesture is a movement that expresses or communicates something, from reaching out to turning away, opening a hand or drawing it back.

A gesture is a movement that expresses or communicates something, from reaching out to turning away, opening a hand or drawing it back.

Some gestures are deliberate. Others appear before you have found words for what is happening.

You can say yes while leaning away. Say you’re fine while gripping the chair. Reach towards someone and stop halfway.

The movement is worth noticing, not interrogating.

A gesture doesn’t arrive with one guaranteed translation. Folded arms might mean discomfort, cold, habit or a comfortable position. The person and the situation matter.

In I AWAKE, attention to movement gives another detail to explore alongside language. You might repeat a small gesture slowly and notice the wish or hesitation around it. You can also leave it uninterpreted when no meaning is clear.

The purpose isn’t to become your own body-language detective. It’s to include what you are doing while you try to understand what you are experiencing.

Voice considers expression through sound. Somatic practice introduces approaches to sensing and movement from within.

The International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association’s About the Profession explains the professional field concerned with learning through bodily awareness and movement.
