The capacity to notice what is present in experience and where attention is going, including the ability to redirect attention deliberately without pretending you can control everything that enters awareness.
Awareness & consciousness is the capacity to notice experience as it unfolds: sensation, thought, image, emotion, environment and the movement of attention between them.
Awareness is not the same as endless self-monitoring. Consciousness is not a guarantee of insight. Sometimes noticing simply gives you one more moment in which another response becomes possible.
This capacity includes attention choice: not total command over attention, but an increasing ability to recognise where it has been captured and decide whether to keep feeding the same object.
The glossary entries on Awareness, Attention and Self-awareness offer useful distinctions. Who Spent Your Attention Today? takes the question into digital environments designed to compete for it.
Across I AWAKE, awareness is treated as a capacity that supports choice rather than as a performance of permanent mindfulness.
