The capacity to participate in closeness where attention, responsiveness and vulnerability can move in more than one direction.
Intimacy & relational closeness is the capacity to be near another person without making proximity, chemistry or availability do all the work of relationship.
You can be intensely wanted and still not feel received. You can speak every day and still experience very little mutuality. You can also care deeply for someone while recognising that the form of closeness available between you is not enough.
This capacity includes reciprocity discernment, receiving capacity and mutual intimacy. It involves noticing what happens when care arrives, how much of yourself is permitted into the relationship, and whether responsiveness is shared rather than managed by one person.
The glossary entries on Intimacy, Reciprocity and Receiving sharpen those distinctions. Heat Is Not Yet Intimacy explores why charge and closeness are related but not interchangeable.
I Want to Be Touched develops this capacity through contact, receiving, sensation and the difference between being present for an experience and managing it.
