Myth

A myth is a culturally meaningful story through which people explore origins, relationships, values, powers and the shape of human life.

A myth is a culturally meaningful story through which people explore origins, relationships, values, powers and the shape of human life.

In this sense, myth doesn’t simply mean a false belief. It concerns what a story can make imaginable, memorable and discussable.

A story can hold a question that advice flattens.

A guardian at a gate may bring protection, fear, loyalty and the cost of remaining outside into the same image. "Stop holding yourself back" leaves much of that out.

I AWAKE uses mythic imagery and the hero’s journey framework to make inner exploration an experience, not only a list of instructions. The Three Hero Journeys of the I AWAKE universe give the reader places and encounters without claiming that every person’s life follows the same ancient script.

The meaning of an image also belongs to its cultural and personal context. A dragon doesn’t carry one universal message wherever it appears.

Archetype introduces recurring patterns in imagery. Joseph Campbell gives the background to the particular narrative framework referenced here.

The Joseph Campbell Foundation’s introduction to the hero's journey explains his comparative account of the hero’s journey. It is a route into his interpretation, not a claim that all myth can be reduced to it.
