Joseph Campbell was a writer and mythologist known for comparing stories and for the pattern commonly called the hero’s journey.

His work asks what recurring movements in myth can reveal about human experience: leaving the familiar, meeting difficulty, receiving help and living differently after an encounter.

It is an influential way of reading stories, not proof that every culture or person follows the same script.

You recognise the movement before knowing its name.

Something in the familiar life no longer fits. You can’t simply go back to not having noticed. You try, hesitate, discover help and find that the original plan wasn’t the whole adventure.

I AWAKE draws on that possibility through the Three Hero Journeys of the I AWAKE universe. The Sensual Hero’s Journey, the Creative Hero’s Journey and the Hidden Hero’s Journey each offer a different framework for exploration, with the reader participating rather than watching a fictional hero do all the changing.

You can choose books across the three. A meaningful framework needn’t become another set of rules to live up to.

Hero’s journey introduces the pattern. Myth looks at stories as carriers of meaning rather than historical instructions.

The Joseph Campbell Foundation’s introduction to the hero's journey explains Campbell’s account from the organisation dedicated to his work. It is a direct starting point for the framework behind the familiar phrase.
