Inner parts

Inner parts is a way of describing different needs, impulses or perspectives within you, especially when they want different things.

Inner parts is a way of describing different needs, impulses or perspectives within you, especially when they want different things.

One part wants to accept the invitation. Another is exhausted. One wants to be seen. Another would prefer a remarkably quiet life in which nobody reviews anything.

You don’t have to decide that only one is the real you.

What is each response trying to preserve?

Rest, connection, dignity, excitement, safety, a chance to make something happen. The conflict can become more understandable when you notice the concern beneath each position.

In I AWAKE, writing and imaginal encounters can give these responses words or figures. This is a reflective way of approaching experience, not a diagnosis or a claim that every part is a separate personality.

The guided seven-day book All of Me, part of the Sensual Hero’s Journey, explores how different responses can participate in a choice together.

Agreement isn’t always immediate. Understanding the disagreement can still change how you treat yourself while deciding.

Ambivalence names opposing feelings about the same thing. The Circle offers another way to meet an aspect of your experience through guided imagination.

The International Association for Analytical Psychology’s The Theory of Complexes introduces a related Jungian account of emotionally organised patterns. It is useful background, while remaining distinct from every contemporary use of parts language.
