Reflection is giving attention to an experience so you can understand something about it, consider its meaning or decide what to do next.
It can include writing, conversation, quiet thought or noticing a detail you passed over while the moment was happening.
Does the next pass add anything?
You look again at a conversation and recognise that you asked for reassurance when you needed practical help. That new distinction can change the next request.
Or you repeat the same argument for an hour and arrive at the same ache. That may be something else asking for attention.
I AWAKE gives reflection a structure through particular questions and practices. The aim isn’t to keep you examining yourself indefinitely. It’s to help the experience become clear enough that you can meet your life with more choice.
Sometimes reflection ends in action. Sometimes it ends in accepting that you need more information or that tonight is for rest.
Rumination considers repetitive thought that doesn’t add useful understanding. Integration follows what happens when a useful distinction becomes something you can live with.
Noba’s Self-Regulation and Conscientiousness explores how people relate their actions to goals and intentions. It offers background for reflection that informs behaviour rather than becoming a substitute for participating.
